Medallion Man Medwyn Makes It 13 Golds At RHS Chelsea

Medwyn_Main

He’s only gone and done it. Scourge of triskaidekaphobes everywhere, Medwyn Williams MBE dug out his thirteenth consecutive RHS Gold Medal at Chelsea this September. His customarily immaculate array of no less than forty-two types of pristine veg wowed judges, pros, celebs, and those whose imagination is perhaps most cherished; the general public. What of you? Have you seen Medwyn’s prizewinning parapet of produce? His rightly regarded rampart of results? When ‘Wizard William’s’ wickedly wild western-Welsh wonder-wall wins we want witnesses! Come and see!

Not since Cliffhanger has such a wall of spectacularly sculpted veg been assembled to do battle. The excellence of Medwyn’s selection this year was surpassed only by the ken required to bring such a disparate range to its peak simultaneously. Precipitous challenges along the way included a false start when the traditional May slot for the Chelsea show was abandoned, meaning the vast majority of Medwyn’s endeavours had to be discarded and begun afresh this year. Notwithstanding, in late September Medwyn and his team trundled out with their barrows of veg across the grumpy-if-glorious mountains of Wales and down through the swooping, relentless majesty of England to the greatest city in the Greater London area.

Once safely ensconced in the Chelsea showground Medwyn and his team, including three generations of the Williams family, follow a time-honoured set-up routine. At this point horticultural skill gives way to nothing less than craftsmanship as the veg are prepared for exhibition. Medwyn favours the traditional Edwin Beckett-style showcase – a demanding display which affords the veg no place to hide. Tomato towers, celery plumes, spitting tongues of chilli fire, sprout spheres, intricate onions, carrot volleys, cauliflowers mounted like stags heads! Just a few of the meticulously constructed parts that comprised this years’ beautifully conceived arrangement. Amongst their number were some divine examples of the AutoPot-grown, much to our delight.

To see onions, cucumbers, and chillies raised in 1Pot XL and easy2grow modules winning RHS Gold again was quite a thrill. Likewise the groundbreaking use of AQUAbox Spyder to irrigate raised beds for Medwyn’s competition potatoes. Tuckered out from his exploits, interviews, and the sheer weight of his gold medallions, Medwyn is understandably having a lil’ chill right now. Our congratulations and heartfelt thanks to him and his team for their dazzling work. We look forward to catching up with all at Medwyn’s in the near future.
